Rainmaker 101
Mentoring & Mastermind Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration closes TODAY, January 5, 2009, at 5 PM ET!

1. What results can I expect as a member of the Rainmaker 101 Mentoring & Mastermind Program? You'll master business development tasks such as networking (offline and online), speaking, and article writing. You'll create or refine your client development plan and know what to do as well as when and how to do it for maximum success. At the end of the 6 months, you'll have a library of resources and personalized plans; you'll communicate clearly about your practice; you'll have a broader network; and you'll have increased confidence in your business development skills.

Can I promise that you'll have landed $X in new business by the end of the program? No. Some participants will get new business and/or new clients, while otherwise will lay the foundation for future success. What I can guarantee, though, is that if you work through the program and implement consistent activity, you will see measurable progress in your client development efforts and that your progress will far exceed what you'll experience if you choose to go it alone.

2. What do I get as a member of the Rainmaker 101 Program? You receive the following:

  • One-hour consultation with me, to create or refine your business development plan

  • Four 15-minute coaching calls to be used at any time over the 6-month program

  • Weekly coaching call-in hours for additional one-on-one support

  • Two group telephone calls each month (60-90 minutes each)

  • One training call, in which you'll learn proven client development tactics

  • One Q&A call, in which you can ask your questions, share your progress, present obstacles you're facing for feedback from me and from other members of the group

  • Review of written materials (such as articles, presentation materials, etc.) and suggestions on how to make them more effective for rainmaking purposes

  • Recording of all calls

  • Participation in members-only online forum for 24/7 feedback

3. What's the curriculum? The Rainmaker 101 teleclasses offered on December 2 and 9 offered a preview of the topics we'll cover, and the 6-month program will go into those topics more deeply. (Missed the calls? Download the recordings here.) You'll also learn:

  • How to create (or refine) your personalized business plan, set your goals and your strategy for reaching them

  • Which tactics will help you reach your goals

  • Which behaviors and attitudes make you the kind of lawyer clients hire -- and what actions make you the kind of lawyer clients fire

  • The easiest route to new business

  • Where and how to network so you meet your ideal contacts

  • How introverts can break through networking discomfort

  • What you must do to make your networking time worthwhile

  • Online networking tactics

  • How to introduce yourself effectively

  • What to say to get potential clients talking

  • How to interest clients in your services without looking pushy or desperate

  • How to speak to your potential clients in a way that gets results

  • What you should always offer your current clients (and why it matters)

  • How to find the time to engage in rainmaking activity

  • The key habits that will keep you in contact with potential clients and garner top-of-mind status

  • How to evaluate your return on rainmaking investment

  • How to develop the perception of expertise

  • How to ask for the business... And when to do it

  • And more

4. What if I can't make the group calls? All calls will be recorded, so you'll be able to hear everything from your computer (or you can transfer the recordings to an MP3 player or CDs) and won't miss any content.

5. Why do you require an application for membership in the group? I've requested applications for two reasons: first, because I want to ensure that the Rainmaker 101 program will deliver the results you're seeking, and second, because I want to ensure that everyone who joins is serious about participating. This program does not function by osmosis, and if someone is unwilling to complete an application, they will not be successful in the program.

6. How large is the group? The group is limited to no more than 10 participants. This group size ensures that every participant will have time to get all of his or her questions answered and that I'll have plenty of time to devote to helping each member develop a personalized approach to reaching his or her business development goals.

7. How can I find the time to add this into my schedule? I'm already slammed! Even if you participate in every call, you'll add a maximum of only 4 hours per month to your schedule, plus about 15 minutes per day for a rainmaker "to do" item. Each call will also address how to handle rainmaking tasks efficiently, how to create systems and routines, and how to delegate tasks to an assistant (or the Internet) to free up additional time. You'll learn how to be more efficient and effective in rainmaking as well as other practice-related activities.

8. Times are tight. How can I justify the expense? What's the value of one new client or one new billable matter? If a new client translates directly into additional income for you, you'll likely recoup the program investment with just one or two new matters. If you're paid a salary and don't receive direct income by generating new work, you'll experience increased professional opportunities and will likely see an increase in your salary to compensate you for your rainmaking.

Most importantly, though, if you wait until the economy improves, you'll be competing against everyone else who will be gearing up again at that time. In contrast, if you're among the smaller number of lawyers willing to invest even when times are tight, you'll build deeper relationships and easier access to client opportunities as the economy eases.

And finally, I've priced the program so that you can pay monthly for easier cash flow. If you prefer to pay in full, you'll receive a 5% discount.

9. I'm tempted to join, but I'm not sure this is the right program for me. I have three answers for this question. First, feel free to call or email me with your concerns, and I'll be happy to talk with you and help you determine whether this is the right fit. Second, after reviewing your application, if I don't think this is the right program for you, I'll tell you why and I'll make an alternative suggestion that I believe will be better suited to your situation and goals. And third, I offer a guarantee: if you join the program and conclude at the end of the first month that this isn't the right choice for you, I'll happily refund your payment, minus a $50 administrative fee.
