Leaving the law
Do you find yourself
fantasizing about a new career? Studies show that up to one-third of lawyers
consider leaving the law, and one survey indicates that as many as 40,000
lawyers take that plunge each year. Whether you have a passion for something
other than law or simply seek to escape a lifestyle that no longer serves
you, choosing to abandon the practice of law is not an easy decision. You
may face a conflict between your deepest desires and the expectations of
friends, family, or colleagues -- not to mention your own expectations.
Especially if you're not sure what other work you might pursue, you may feel
trapped. Whether you end up finding a way to enjoy and continue in practice
or you decide to leave the law and develop a new career, the process isn't
simple. Nonetheless, it doesn't have to be painful.
This decision
requires a thorough and searching examination of your values, skills,
professional strengths and weaknesses, and lifestyle choices. Coaching
offers you the opportunity to work with a partner who holds no attachment to
your decision except the desire to see you exercise your judgment in your
own best interest. Standing in this crossroad may be exciting and
terrifying; the resolution -- whether you decide to stay or to go -- will be
an adventure. Choose your companion wisely.
